By definition, discrimination describes the treatment against or towards a person of a specific group according to his classification, order or rank. Discrimination may be between individuals or groups of a different race, tribe, ethnic group or background. Gender, employment and reverse discrimination are a few examples. All forms of bigotry imply rejection or exclusion. Various religious groups permit unfair treatment based on certain principals and allow for intolerance against single mothers and gays. However, they will cease victimization on the basis of age, disability and breastfeeding to name of few. At some point in your life, you will become a victim of intolerance based upon the narrow-mindedness of others. For years, people have been experiencing discrimination in work places. Personally, I don’t feel t hat I have not been the recipient of unfairness, but I do feel that, â€Å"At one point or another nearly everyone has felt that they are the victim of some form of discrimination in the workplace† (Linton 1). Discrimination results when an employer develops prejudice against a certain employee due to reasons considered to be unjustifiable. For example, an employer may dislike an employee because of the color of their skin, or religious beliefs, therefore deny hiring them regardless of their qualification. The 1960s Civil Rights Act states that this form of discrimination is illegal and should not be projected on people based on superficial features. Experience has shown, over and over again, that investment in girls education translate directly and quickly into better nutrition for the whole family, better health care, declining fertility, poverty reduction and better overall economic performance. Michelangelo Bonaparte has come to be known as the greatest artist of his time, and one of the all time greats for sure. Albeit unlike other artists of his time he was recognized for his greatness while he was alive. He was also torn between his patronage, of the Medici family in Florence, and the Catholic church in Rome. The overly ornate and intricate style of painting and the over the top color scheme and overall grandeur of the fresco also points towards the Mannerist period. Another piece of art that exemplifies the Mannerist period by Michelangelo is his sculpture of David. Although its a sculpture he is trying to show the human soul personified by the ornate and obscure structure of the human body and musculature. He is showing you a man in a seemingly natural position. But in reality this pose would be hard to hold over a period of time. And if a closer look is taken it can be seen that the musculature of this sculpture is not exactly anatomically correct. Evil has always been in everyones lives Essay Evil has always been in everyones lives. Some people have it more than others. There are places in the world where evil almost takes over. It crops up in all kinds of places, all over the world. In these texts, Macbeth, Frankenstein and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde there is a definite theme of evil throughout. In this essay I will write about what evil there is specifically in each of these texts. I will start with Macbeth because it has the most overriding evil out of the three. In the play Macbeth, by William Shakespeare, the leading character is Macbeth. He is a good, loyal nobleman in Scotland. At the beginning he has the title of Thane of Glamis. He has just fought a battle and is on his way back to the king. The first time we come across evil in this film is while he is walking across a heath. Three witches appear to Macbeth and his friend Banquo. Witches have always been considered as evil beings; later in the play we find this to be true. The first witch says, All hail Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Glamis, the second witch continues All hail Macbeth, hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor and the third witch then says All hail Macbeth, that shalt be king hereafter. Basically the witches are telling Macbeth that he will become the Thane of Cawdor and then king. Telling the future has been considered as an evil thing to do, by some. They then go on to tell Banquo that his descendants will be kings. A messenger then comes to the heath and tells Macbeth he has been appointed Thane of Cawdor. Macbeth then goes off to see the king where he promptly announces that the successor to him will be his son, Malcolm. This troubles Macbeth as the witches just told him that he would become king. Macbeths evil thoughts now begin, he says in my way it lies. This is referring to Malcolm; he lies in Macbeths way to becoming king of Scotland. The king says that he will be going to Macbeths castle to celebrate the victory in the recent battle. Macbeth had written a letter to his wife, Lady Macbeth, about what had happened with the witches. She is also an evil person in the play. Some say just as much as Macbeth. She has planned a way to kill off King Duncan by the time the kings party arrive at their castle. She does this because she knows that Macbeth is too full o the milk of human kindness to do it himself. When Macbeth arrives home, his wife informs him of her plan to kill the king. He grudgingly agrees. Lady Macbeth tells him he must look like the innocent flower but be the serpent under it. This means he must act like everything is okay, but know underneath that he is going to kill the king. This of course in an evil thing to do, murder is one of the most evil things a person can commit. When the play was written people considered royalty to be Gods representative on earth, so killing the king was like killing God, unforgivable. The killing of Duncan went as follows: The chamberlains were drugged through their wine, and Lady Macbeth rung the bell twice as a sign to Macbeth that all was ready. While this was happening Macbeth saw, or thought he saw, a dagger in front of him, pointing toward Duncans room. This is thought to be a sign from the witches who are evil to make him go towards, and kill, Duncan. As Lady Macbeth rings the bell twice, Macbeth says that the bell is one that summons thee to heaven or to hell, referring to Duncan either going to hell or heaven. The plan was for him to use the chamberlains daggers to kill the guards, and then plant them back on them. In the mad rush to escape after he murders Duncan he forgets to plant the daggers. When Lady Macbeth sees this she immediately takes the daggers from him and does it herself. This act shows that Lady Macbeth is doing evil, or at least being an apprentice to murder. She goes and puts them back and also smothers the grooms faces with blood. At this point Macbeth is regretting the fact that he has committed regicide, killing a monarch. The next day, after Duncans sons, Malcolm and Donaldbain, find out about their father being killed, they decide to run away. They said, theres daggers in mens smiles. This basically means people could be pretending to be good, but underneath they arent. Because Malcolm and Donaldbain ran away, Macbeth was declared the new king of Scotland the third of the witches prophecies comes true. Macduff is very suspicious of Macbeth and chooses not attend Macbeths coronation at scone. After the coronation Macbeth is very insecure about his position. This is because the witches prophecies came true about him, and his is worried the same will happen with Banquo. He says to be thus is nothing, but to be safely thus he is basically saying that being king is nothing, if his descendants wont be. At this point he starts to think about killing Banquo and his son, Fleance. Essay About Romeo And Juliet TragedyThis is a physically disgusting creature to all who observe it. In creating this body he needed to get parts for the body. To get these parts he went into graveyards at night and dug up dead bodies and cut off limbs organs. This is one more example of wrongdoing in this book. It disrespects the dead immensely. When the monster is brought to life, Frankenstein neglects his duty as a parent and runs away from the Monster. Because of Victor running away the Monster it does not learn anything, and when it goes out in public it is shunned, and gets stones thrown at it and is generally treated very badly. The Monster goes into a forest and finds a house with an blind man and his family living in it. The Monster decides to live in a hidden part of the house, and while he is there, he picks up how to communicate. The Monster plucks up the courage to go and see the blind man, when he does; the man is not bothered by him as he cannot see how disfigured the Monster is. But when his family comes back they see the Monster and the family beat it off and send it away. The Monster is very angry with this and goes back to the forest later in the book to try and get revenge; the family are not there. The Monster then goes in search of Victor Frankenstein, his creator. While he is looking for Frankenstein, the Monster comes across Frankensteins younger brother, William, and kills him. This is, of course a very evil thing to do, perhaps more than any other thing someone can do. The Monster takes Williams locket and puts it in his mums pocket to frame her. She is hung for murder. When has a mental breakdown, one of his friends, Cleval helps him through this rough time. He is almost completely recovered when he finds out about William being killed. Frankenstein knows that it was the Monster that did it. The Monster is still seeking revenge; he goes off and kills Cleval. Victor sees the Monster, later in the book, on top of a mountain, but he does not mention it because he feels guilty because he knows that what he has done is evil and wrong. When Frankenstein goes on a walk he crosses paths with the Monster. The monster tells Victor his story, that all he wants is to be loved, and that if Frankenstein makes him a mate, he will go away to the north pole and never come back. Frankenstein moves to Scotland to create this second creature. This is more evil than it was the first time, because he knows the consequences of making another monster. He has the second monster all ready to be brought to life, but he decides to destroy it instead. The Monster sees this happen and is extremely angry about it. The Monster says to Victor, I can make you so wretched that the light of day will be hateful to you. You are my creator, but I am your master à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã¢â‚¬Å"obey! The Monster kills Elizabeth Frankensteins friend fiancÃÆ' © on their wedding night. He then goes to the North Pole to commit suicide. Frankenstein then dies on a boat. In The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde there is many examples of evil and wrongdoing. The story is basically about a man who creates a potion to separate the evil and good into separate people. This is a wrong thing to do, as it is taking the place of God, and creating a being by himself. When Dr. Jekyll takes this potion he made, he splits into himself, and Mr. Hyde Mr. Hyde is the evil in Dr. Jekyll. Mr Hyde is pure evil, all he does is evil actions, he pushes over a small girl in the street, kills a man for no reason and kills himself killing yourself is evil as it is taking the responsibility away from God to kill you off when he sees fit. By using his potion that he created, he has created a character of complete evil, this is, of course a wrong thing to do. In conclusion I would like to say that in most stories, not all, but most, the good comes off as the winner. In real life this is not always the case. Readers like to read about evil, and what it would be like if all the novels, and plays containing evil were real. Evil is a very overriding theme in some peoples lives. It is the same in these three texts, although, in all of them the evil is eradicated in the end, not always the case in everyday life.

â€Å"The men in the novel are all repressive patriarchs. For them, male supremacy must be absolute. † In the light of this comment, discuss Bronte’s presentation of male characters in ‘Jane Eyre’. Throughout the novel of Jane Eyre, there seems to be a common sense of patriarchal dominance, as possessed by the male characters. Bronte shows male supremacy through four key characters that Jane encounters throughout her life. Each character differs hugely, though this sense of a higher and more powerful individual, over Jane, remains prevalent in each – they are all repressive patriarchs in some way, though of varying magnitudes.The Victorian society was a completely different society to the one we live in now and it was well-known to be male-dominated and one in which women had almost no rights at all. The fact that Bronte wrote Jane Eyre during this period in time is clearly reflected in the male characters in the novel. It is evident that Bronte hers elf may have experienced or been put in some of the situations that she portrays Jane to be in by some oppressive male character in her own life.Nevertheless, it is seen that these characters do change as the novel progresses as Bronte seems to give them a chance to withdraw themselves as a repressive force, and show a little more consideration and compassion towards others and women in particular. John Reed is the first of Bronte’s repressive patriarchs in the novel. He is placed at the beginning of the novel and is introduced to us almost immediately. He is in fact the very first oppressive force to Jane in her life and in this way is very significant.At first, John does not seem to be a huge threat to Jane, merely branding her a â€Å"bad animal† and a â€Å"rat†. This juvenile name-calling behaviour, as expressed by John, is still oppressive in that he uses these names to assert a higher power over Jane, subsequent to pronouncing all the books in the house a s his property. He reminds Jane that she is in a highly precarious position in society and that she has no class due to the fact that she is living with them. She is classified as â€Å"less than a servant† according to him because she does â€Å"nothing for [her] keep†.John taunts Jane proclaiming that she â€Å"ought to beg† to even live. He continuously reminds Jane that she is a â€Å"dependent†; somewhat indicating that she is dependent on him due to the fact that he is the only male in the household, and therefore the master by birth. Furthermore, John demands obedience of Jane, even though he is only but four years older than her. He exercises what he feels is his power as a male over her physically, as can be seen when he hits Jane with a book as the â€Å"volume was flung†.This physical abuse is indicative of Bronte expressing that John Reed believes that male supremacy must be absolute. The regularity of his bullying as a demand for obedi ence of Jane, not â€Å"once or twice in a day, but continually† is also characteristic of a repressive patriarch who would feel more secure in continuous rather than periodic abuse. John Reed’s appearance may even be said to be one of a typical oppressive male character. Being â€Å"large and stout† with â€Å"heavy limbs and large extremities† indicate that he is quite a large boy for his age and automatically an intimidating individual.His actions towards Jane are also somewhat animalistic such as â€Å"thrusting out his tongue at [her] as far as he could without damaging the roots†, suggesting his belief in a primal sense of alpha male dominance over a shrewdness of apes. He is quite grotesque as well and he does not just exert his power over Jane, but he â€Å"twisted the necks of the pigeons, [and] killed the little pea-chicks. † It is clear that Bronte is extremely disgusted with his manner of indulging in animal cruelty as a means to show his masculinity.John is also disagreeable towards his mother and acts without respect towards her, emphasising his belief that he is of a higher status than all women, not just Jane. He â€Å"called his mother ‘old girl’ too; sometimes reviled her for her dark skin, similar to his own; bluntly disregarded her wishes, [and] not infrequently tore and spoiled her silk attire. † These aspects of John Reed, with no doubt, express Bronte’s strong feelings about the fact that all men thought that they were superior to a woman. Her disapproval and abhorrence of male supremacy is clear. Mr Brocklehurst is the second tormenting force that Jane is exposed to in her life.He differs to John Reed in the fact that whilst John Reed is a form of physical oppression towards Jane, Brocklehurst is a form of religious oppression. Nevertheless, both of the two characters are similar in appearance as can be seen by Bronte’s description of them, reinforcing this idea that male characters of oppression have a certain appearance to express their power. When Jane first meets Brocklehurst, the first description she ever gives him is one with negative connotations – â€Å"a black pillar† that was â€Å"standing erect on the rug; the grim face at the top was like a carved mask, placed above the shaft by way of capital. Immediately we are given the sense that he is an imposing and unbending character who is just plain frightening, especially to a young Jane. Brocklehurst seems to be a gothic villain in a sense and as a â€Å"stony stranger†, the sibilance emphasises the fact that he is extremely unapproachable, hard and unforgiving. Bronte also gives Brocklehurst a â€Å"bass voice† which emphasises his masculinity, as well as large features that are â€Å"harsh and prim† to highlight his unyielding disposition.We soon find out that Brocklehurst is in fact a religious hypocrite who uses religion as a vehicle for his repressive force that he exerts on the pupils at his school. However, we are not on first introduction immediately shown his hypocrisy by Bronte until a little later in the novel when Jane is at his school. Upon Jane and Brocklehurst’s first meeting, he pointedly asks Jane if she should like to â€Å"fall into that pit [full of fire] and be burning there for ever†. In an oppressive manner, Brocklehurst uses these implications of hell as such to scare and terrify Jane into obedience.If we read into Brocklehurst’s language, his hypocrisy is revealed to us. He states to Jane that she would burn in hell â€Å"for ever. † The fact that he says â€Å"for ever† is key in that he particularly twists the Christian ideas. When he mentions hell to Jane he ignores a key Christian idea that you may be saved from hell in an effort to frighten her into submission. Brocklehurst does not know for a fact that Jane will go to hell, but he is threatening her with the idea of hell, as he does with all the girls at Lowood School. Bronte writes the first conversation between Brocklehurst in a way that puts our sympathies, as a reader, with Jane. You must pray to God to change it: to give you a new and clean one: to take away your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh† was the advice given to Jane by Brocklehurst – this is ironic in that Brocklehurst is described by Bronte as being â€Å"stony† himself, emphasising Bronte’s effort to sway the audience’s opinions to side with Jane. At Lowood, Brocklehurst firmly preaches the idea that God wants women to devote themselves to domesticity in order to please Him. He states that â€Å"humility is a Christian grace and one peculiarly appropriate to the pupils of Lowood† and that he brings the girls up in a way so as to cultivate this.Brocklehurst reveals his own hypocrisy and effectively shoots himself in the foot and shows that he clearly does not practice what he preaches with his own children when he tells the story of his daughter Augusta and her trip to Lowood. She pointedly states that she does not think that he has â€Å"a right to command [her] merely because [he] is older that her† and in this way she has stated that the fact that he is male also does not play a part, though she does not actually say this. However, as their relationship progresses, this equality is warped and some of it is lost as Rochester seemingly becomes more desperate to have Jane for himself. This gradual increase in commands directed at Jane can be seen when Jane asks to leave him to see Mrs Reed.He commands her to â€Å"promise [him] one thing†, that being â€Å"not to advertise: and to trust this quest of a situation to me. I’ll find you one in time. † His desperation for her to come back as soon as possible is evident in the fact that he orders her not to advertise so that she will definitely come back to him. When Jane tries to leave Rochester for good, upon finding out that he does indeed have a wife, in the form of Bertha Mason, Rochester threatens violence in order to get her to stay. He is desperate to get through to her and to convince her to stay and it is interesting that he seems to want to resort to this.The fact that he threatens this shows us that he is at an end and this is what a male character would do in order to get someone to comply with their wishes. Rochester is interesting in that he does try to give Jane a lot of freedom as a woman to do as she wishes, and is comfortable being an equal with her, but when it comes down to it, he always finally resorts to his dominance as a male. Jane, however, does finally retu rn to Rochester at the end of the novel. She makes her way back to Thornfield only to find it burned to the ground and she seeks out Rochester whom she finds disabled following the great fire started by Bertha.This loss of an arm and his sight his key to making Rochester a suitable husband for Jane. Anyone willing to apply for a job or joining the military is subject to random drug tests. Anyone that works and pays taxes helps the welfare system. The reason testing could be justified would be how much fraud is generally found each year alone without drug testing and just by reasonable suspecion. â€Å"The Office of Inspector General (OIG) identified $16.67 million in fraud during Fiscal Year (FY)2011 within multiple Michigan public assistance program areas† (michigan.gov). Drug testing would save the government money and help distribute the benefits more to those who actually need it, by denying those who fail to pass a drug screening when applying. Many of the laws purposed would not deny benefits to the dependents the person may have, just the person applying. The dependent(s) would still receive the necessary help. Also the person who failed the drug test or has an apparent issue with legal substance abuse could be given the correct direction for treatment and get their lives going back in the right direction. Drug testing is unjustifiable, ineffective, potentially unconstitutional, and worst of all being discriminatory. Besides it being an invasion of privacy, it’s in violation of the 4th amendment. Using illicit drugs may not even be the reason they are applying for welfare. People have a choice where they want to work, but not always a choice to need welfare. Also not everyone that is in need has a drug problem or does drugs. The cost to test every applicant would outweigh the amount saved denying benefits for those who tested positive. There are alternatives to drug screening that would cost less and already a part of the applying process. Drug testing is a positive step towards many things in the welfare area, as with any job anyone is subject to random drug testing, why should welfare be exempt? Currently if reasonable suspicion was justified a person would have to submit a test anyways. The benefits show, in 2011, Florida passed the law HB 353 requiring all applicants for TANF benefits to be tested. Applicants must be notified of the drug testing requirement at the time of application, and are required to pay for the test. If they test negative the applicant will be reimbursed for the cost by adding the amount to their benefit check. The results from the first quarter of the law being passed (July-September) show the dramatic impact of Florida’s drug testing requirement for applicants for welfare cash assistance. The requirement has led to a 48 percent drop in monthly approvals, an overall drug-related denial rate of 19 percent, and almost $1.8 million in savings to taxpayers. Denials vary greatly by county, with at least one in three applicants being denied for a drug-related reason in 11 counties and no drug-related denials in another ten counties (floridafga.org). This example shows the potential of savings for the government and taxpayers and also more available funds to the ones really in need. Drug testing applicants has many flaws when it comes to proving if someone may have a problem or is even using illegal drugs. Drug testing isn’t even thought of when it comes to unemployment or applying for school financial aid. Drug tests often fail to show the results of people who are using more addictive and more dangerous drugs like heroin, methamphetamine, or cocaine, which can exit the body’s system in a matter of hours or a couple days. Being free from drugs would then help someone not need welfare because they would be able to get a regular job in the work world, thus saving the government more money in the long run. The United States seems to be the only country with the issue of drug testing, but this could be a positive thing that could influence other countries around the world. The welfare program isn’t about helping people with drug problems get the correct help they need; it’s about helping those in need of assistance when they are low income or unable to afford their current situation. A bill passed would force drug screening but more than likely not get the person the correct help if there was a problem. The main objective is denying people assistance because of testing positive for drugs. Drug testing for individuals applying for government cash assistance should be mandatory before assistance is granted. The idea of drug testing individuals for eligibility of government assistance has many pros and cons. With many of the strengths being that it will help the funds that are available to help those people truly in need, and not helping people that don’t need help just because they can trick the system. Taxpayers spend a lot of money to help support the welfare system and many want to see the ones that can afford to buy drugs or othe r non-essential items not be part of the equation. Another positive thing could be getting help to those who actually have a drug problem so they don’t have to apply for welfare and can go have a fulfilling job and life. But with all the strengths will come just as many weaknesses. Many of the weaknesses stem from drug testing itself to be immoral. The cost and regulation of drug testing could also hinder the benefits of the program, causing a deficit in the end overall. Many of the drugs tested may not be able to be screened properly, with the 2 mostly abused drugs legal being alcohol and nicotine. Not everyone that is low income has a drug problem or does drugs. The misconception view the public has of low income people is they just want to get free money and not have to work. I think the issue still remains that people do abuse the welfare system, and drug testing can help in part of making things more fair to those truly in need. That is just a stepping stone in a bigger overall solution of the flawed welfare system. One might question their morals before deciding on whether or not they actually need help, and then decide what the right thing to do is.
